From ARPAnet to Facebook: The Story of Cyberspace
Hello everyone I am going to talk about two
technologies today, where (spoiler alert!! ) one is still in use, and another is
forgotten. Please check the used sources on the bottom. I was shocked, when I realized
that the used processors for the spacecrafts. I would and I am sure everybody’d
think they have the newest, strongest hardware, however it is not the truth.
“Many of the processors powering essential spacecraft functions now date back
to the 1990”s -Joe McKendrick.[1]
When a spacecraft system is being produced, it has to pass a bunch of tests and
different preparations before the release. It can take up YEARS and processing
powers on the market can be doubled until tests are done. It is the reason,
these spacecraft systems can be safer, but outdated. So basically they concentrate
for the reliability, imagine what would happen in space if a processor goes
wrong… Let me show you a few interesting example: The “Mars Explorer”;
curiosity uses a processor called Dual BAE RAD750, which was passed every test
in 2001 and it was launched in 2011. Morpheus, was a test craft, which used the
same and was launched in 2012, but got a failure and exploded -lesson need to
test more. Most interesting fact was that, the International Space Station’s
main computer uses an Intel 386i, which was produced back in 1985 and is
outdated since 2007. In my point of view, it is promising, that these
processors can still function in our decade, because it means manufacturers
made a really good job in a point of view. Read more examples from the sources.
While the first technology is still in use and I promised I will give you an
example which is forgotten, this technology is still available, however I am
sure no one used it for a while except my grand mom she really likes it. When we
were children, We dreamed about getting internet on TV, on that time I am quite
sure we did not know about “Teletext”. It is service for televisions where you
could get news, subtitles and tv program guide. It is kind of internet built
into the television but much smaller and design poorer. I previously said we
wanted internet on our TV but if we think a little the opposite happed because right
now we are watching TV(stream) on our PCs. Afterall, Smart TV’s came which is a
computer if we think in it, but that was not a big deal as watching TV on
phone.
Enough about the spiritual aspect, the first Teletext service was in 1974 (!)
by BBC and they provided subtitles for hearing impaired people. Later on,
Internet just became more popular and available for everyone, so Teletext’s
popularity dropped and BBC stopped it in 2009. There are channels that still
provide this service, but when was the last time you used it? I, personally
can’t remember.
